Today (13/april/2012) I had the oportunity to interview the awesome DJ/producer (and sundcloud sensation) Jack Deezl. So, here’s the english version of the amazing interview.
Jack Deezl is a young DJ and producer that’s been using social media (specially SOUNDCLOUD) to broadcast his music. His music is basically an awesome mix of ambient electronic and some Dubstep. I could just write more about him, but let just that Jack Deezl talks about a few things like his personal life, music he likes and the plans for this 2012.
INTERVIEW WITH JACK DEEZL.
RKD: I know you live in Philadelphia, right? did you move or you’ve been in Philadephia all your life?
Jack Deezl: I grew up in Asbury Park, NJ and moved to Philadelphia when I was 18 to attend college at Drexel University, where I currently am a Junior majoring in Music production. I love Philly though, it’s become my second home, and I plan on staying here after I graduate college. I really like the scene, all the DJ’s are real tight with each other and very supportive of each other.
RKD:When you were a kid, did you ever consider to be a DJ and producer?
JD: I never thought about being a DJ, but I’ve been playing Guitar since I was 8 and always knew that I wanted to be in a band as a professional career. When I was 17 my band broke up and I was about to go off to college in a year so I didn’t think there was much of a point to starting a new band, so I started producing hip-hop tracks. Eventually, when I was 19 I started producing electro and dubstep and that’s when I started going by Jack Deezl.
RKD: What was your first contact to the music? What was the first record you bought?
JD: My first contact with music was probably hearing my Dad play guitar around the house growing up and listening to my parents records. I can’t really remember what the first record I ever bought was, but the first record I ever fell in love with was Nevermind by Nirvana. I found it when I was 10 years old, in 5th grade, and it changed my life forever.
RKD: Did you receive any musical formation (you know, like guitar or anything like that)? how did you end up doing this music?
JD: I took guitar lessons from a few different teachers from when I was 8 until I was 18. I also went to a performing arts high school where I was trained in classical music theory and some jazz guitar, and a little basic piano. Now, I’m a music production major at college, so I study recording technology and engineering.
RKD: I know on June you’re going to release your debut EP, can you tell me more about it?
JD: The title of the EP is “Unrest”. There’s six songs on it, two of which are out already (“Heart Murmurs” and “Coast”). It’s a bit of a departure from my sound so far, a lot of my remixes have been really heavy Dubstep and with this EP I got a little more experimental and used a lot of samples from old records and messed around with a lot of synths that wouldn’t necessarily be considered Dubstep. I think my fans will like it though, it’s still me *Laughs*. It’s not so much a departure from my sound as the natural evolution of it.
RKD: How does Jack Deezl write his music? Because I mean, I’ve heard a lot your material recently and I have to say it’s very awesome. How’s that process?
JD: I compose and perform all my music in Ableton live. I use soft synths for 99% of my synth sounds (and occasionally a moog voyager), and I take all of my samples from vinyl records. In addition to sampling records, I record myself playing a lot of live instruments (mostly guitar, piano and drums) and then sample the recordings of that.
RKD: What are the plans for Jack Deezl on the summer? Any tour?
JD: Well, I’ll be releasing the EP on June 30th, then I will (hopefully) be touring the east coast in July, but I can’t really talk about that because tour plans are still in the works. Along with that, I will be playing a lot of shows in New York City, Philadelphia, and Asbury Park, NJ.
RKD: If you could choose any artist of the whole muiscal industry to collaborate with , which artist you’d choose?
JD: Oh man, tough question. If we’re talking anyone, alive or dead, it would have to be John Bonham of Led Zeppelin. I love his drumming more than any other drummer I’ve ever heard. As far as people that are still alive today, I would love to collaborate with Jay Electronica. I love his raps, his flows are so creative.
RKD: What kind of music are you listening right now? I think it will be interesting to know what muisc hears someone like you
JD: Right now, I’ve been listening to a ton of Burial, SebastiAn, El Guincho and Starscream. I love weird stuff.
RKD: Any plans to come to Mexico?
JD: I would love to come to Mexico, but I book all my own shows so it’s hard to book myself in areas where I don’t know any of the booking agents. BUT, if any booking agents that do shows in Mexico are reading this interview, BOOK ME! *Laughs*
